YHA Festival of Walking: Cambridge City Walk (9 miles / 14.5 km - Leisurely, Booking Required)
This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.
A leisurely day walk around the city of Cambridge, through the historic centre and several green spaces, hosted by Stag Walkers as part of the YHA Festival of Walking.
This is a relatively flat walk mainly on surfaced paths. Hazards are minimal except for traffic whilst crossing busy roads, cyclists particularly in the city centre and cattle grazing on some of the commons. Please bring a packed lunch / snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally something to sit on at lunchtime (e.g. a sitmat).
The route starts from the YHA Cambridge Hostel and heads through to Mill Road before reaching Coldham's Common. We’ll walk across the common and past the Abbey Stadium, then along part of the former Cambridge to Mildenhall railway line at the edge of Ditton Meadows.
On reaching the village of Fen Ditton, we’ll turn back through the Meadows and take a gentle stroll alongside the River Cam before stopping for a short break at Stourbridge Common.
We’ll continue upstream through Midsummer Common and Jesus Green, looking out for bird life and boats on the river, before reaching central Cambridge. Then we’ll amble through the streets passing some of the city’s fine architecture, including many university buildings such as the famous King’s College Chapel.
Next, we rejoin the River Cam and can view the Mathematical Bridge before having our packed lunch stop at Laundress Green, with an optional drink stop at The Mill pub opposite. Then we continue through further commons, crossing Sheep’s Green and Coe Fen, leaving the Cam to follow Vicar’s Brook and Hobson’s Brook.
Finally we loop back towards our start point alongside the Guided Busway and past Cambridge railway station, returning to YHA Cambridge where we can treat ourselves to some refreshments including a free cuppa and cake!
What makes this walk special?
1. Explore one of the oldest university cities in the world
2. Connect with fellow walkers who enjoy getting to know different faces and have interesting conversations whilst walking together
3. Free cuppa and cake at the finish
Please note this walk is not suitable for dogs.
