Whitwell & St Paul’s Walden Afternoon Walk (4.5 miles / 7km - Leisurely, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

A short afternoon walk through villages, farmland and woodland, followed by an optional visit to The Living Theatre for an outdoor performance of Macbeth.

Our walk begins by heading from the village of Whitwell to the hamlet of St Paul’s Walden, passing a series of horse paddocks and St Paul’s Walden Bury, the childhood home of the Queen Mother. Walking gently uphill we’ll next go past the Head Gardener’s Cottage and All Saints Church, before skirting through farmland along the edge of Hitch Wood. We’ll then pass a second country house, Stagenhoe (once home to the playwright Arthur Sullivan and now a neurological care centre) and make our way through Walk Wood.

Just after leaving the wood we’ll reach The Living Theatre where, dependent on timing, those wishing to watch the play might like to stop and grab a seat. From here it’s around half a mile down The Valley, past Emily’s Teashop at Waterfall Farm and back into Whitwell to the start point.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.

If the walk is fully booked, click 'join waitlist' to get a place if one becomes available and please check back regularly in case you do get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.
