Thames Path: Woolwich to London Bridge (12.5 miles/20km - Moderate, Booking Required)
This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.
This is the first in a short series of walks following the Thames Path in London. The walk is easily accessible from Stag Walkers territory via National Rail and the Elizabeth Line to Woolwich.
We’ll begin by walking from Woolwich station to the Thames Path’s eastern trailhead at the Woolwich Foot Tunnel (where the Thames Path meets the England Coast Path) then walk mostly alongside the river to London Bridge where we will catch trains back home. There are great views of London landmarks throughout.
The route is graded Moderate due to distance but is mostly flat and on easy terrain. For those who prefer a shorter walk, there are dropout points after 6 miles at Greenwich (10 minute walk to Greenwich station for Thameslink services to London Bridge etc.) and after 10.5 miles at Rotherhithe (2 minute walk to Rotherhithe Overground)
Near the start of the route we pass the impressive Thames Barrier and walk alongside sites of industry which give way to tourist hotspots as we head west. Going around the Greenwich Peninsula and past the O2 there are many modern artworks to look out for, as well as views of the skyscrapers at Canary Wharf.
We’ll have our packed lunches about halfway through our route on the grass in front of the Old Naval College at Greenwich. We then continue past the 19th-century sailing ship Cutty Sark and through Deptford, Rotherhithe and Bermondsey, passing former wharfs, docks and piers in the historic Pool of London. Towards the end of our walk, the modern City of London comes into view and the iconic Tower Bridge. The route will finish at nearby London Bridge station.
Later in the year we will pick up the trail again heading further west.
Optional pub visit after the walk near London Bridge. Toilets available at the Thames Barrier and Greenwich (50p charge).
The route is on pavement so please wear comfortable walking shoes or walking trainers.
This walk is not suitable for dogs.
