Stag Walkers Weekend Away: Exploring the North East (Ramblers members only)

Howay, Stags, we’re off to Newcastle! Join us for a long weekend in the Toon as we head out from the city to explore some of the North East’s stunning and varied landscapes. From the ancient Roman history of Hadrian’s Wall to the grand Norman architecture of Durham cathedral, plus dramatic coastlines and sandy bays all within easy reach, this promises to be a trip packed with some of the finest walking in the country.

There is no obligation to join every walk or group meal but please be confident you can attend for most of the weekend before you book your place.

The walks on this weekend will be 10-15 miles and more challenging than our local walks due to ascent and descent, so a reasonable level of walking fitness will be required.

Booking:
Booking opens: 8pm Thursday 11th June
The weekend is exclusive to current (paid-up) members of the Ramblers. Space is limited to 20 people. Book your place by clicking the ‘Attend’ button on the Meetup event page. If the event is full, click ‘join waitlist’ and you will be added if a place becomes available.

After booking your place, please complete our spreadsheet to tell us about which meals you plan to attend, any dietary requirements and offers of car-sharing. Please complete this as soon as possible and by 15th July at the latest.

The usual Stag Walkers booking policy applies: please book only if confident you can attend and remember to update your RSVP if you have to cancel, and DON’T NO-SHOW unless it is absolutely unavoidable. If you no-show three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.

Accommodation:
When you have confirmed your place, please book your own accommodation. Newcastle has a huge range of accommodation to choose from. We will travel to most of the walks by public transport from Newcastle Central station, so staying within walking distance is recommended. Also bear in mind that if you stay by the river, you’ll likely have a long and steep set of stairs to climb to reach the city centre!

Transport:
Newcastle is around 3 hours by public transport (direct trains run from Stevenage) or 5 hours away by road from Herts. If you are driving, please consider car-sharing if possible.

Meals:
Details of restaurants for evening meals on Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday will be provided nearer the time of the trip. Some of these may require attendees to pay a deposit. Alternatively, you are welcome to make your own arrangements for dinner if you prefer.

Walks:
Thursday 13th August: Newcastle City Centre and the River Tyne
Meet at 4.30pm, likely outside Newcastle Central station for a walk around the city and riverside to ease us into the weekend before dinner.

Walks will also take place on Friday 14th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th. A short walk or social activity may also be planned for Monday 17th before we head home.
Further details of the walks will be provided nearer the time.

Distances will likely range between 10-15 miles and some will be more demanding than our local walks due to lots of ascent and descent. Options include Hadrian’s Wall path (logistics permitting), a pilgrimage through the peaceful countryside to Durham and its magnificent cathedral, and one (or more) of several stunning coastal walks.
Weather conditions may dictate which walks are ultimately undertaken but all will feature fantastic and varied landscapes and plenty of history!

This event is hosted by Stag Walkers - we are a Ramblers group aimed mainly at people in their 20s and 30s but all are welcome and we have members of all ages. We run weekly walks, on Saturdays or Sundays, varying in length from around 5 to 15 miles, and we host regular social nights. Walks and socials generally take place across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and south Cambridgeshire.
