St Alban's Way #2: Borehamwood-Hendon- (12.5mi / 20km, Moderate, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.

This is the second in a series of four planned walks to complete the relatively new walking route called St Alban's Way, a 35 mile trail linking St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London to St Albans Cathedral. It is designed as a pilgrimage to the shrine of St Alban, Britain's first saint, at the Cathedral. You can join us for any or all of these. This is a linear walk. We recommend that drivers park at the start point in Borehamwood and take the train back from Hendon at the end, so that they can get back to their cars.

The terrain is mostly over gently rolling farmland, woodland and green paths, with a few short, sharper inclines along the way.

We begin outside Elstree & Borehamwood station and head off through residential streets on the edge of town before dropping into Moat Mount Open Space, a lovely stretch of ancient woodland and farmland well away from the traffic, where you may well spot a few horses grazing in the fields. From here the route brings us out past Totteridge, with its handsome houses, and onto the Dollis Valley Greenwalk, a peaceful path that follows the Dollis Brook — a proper change of scenery from the woods, and one of the prettiest stretches on this section of the trail. We'll stop here for a packed lunch on the green open space of King George V Playing Fields, Totteridge.

After lunch we continue mostly along the Dollis Valley Greenwalk and riverside paths through Woodside Park and West Finchley, before joining the streets of Hendon for the final approach to the finish. It's a great route for a good mix of countryside, ancient woodland and London suburbs in one walk, and a satisfying chunk of the pilgrimage trail ticked off.
