Spring Bank Holiday: Baldock, Bygrave & Ashwell (11.5 miles/18.5 km - Moderate, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

A scenic walk through undulating farmland and villages to the northeast of Baldock.

From Baldock station we will head out through fields and up towards the small village of Bygrave, passing its little church. Then with wide views ahead of us we’ll walk down to Ashwell, a picturesque village which dates from around the early 10th century. Points of interest here include Ashwell Springs, which form a source for the River Cam, and St Mary's Church, one of the largest village churches in Hertfordshire, which dates from 1381 and boasts some medieval graffiti. We’ll have a packed lunch break in Ashwell and a chance to look inside the church, along with the opportunity of a drink at the Rose & Crown pub.

On our way back to Baldock, we will pass the site of Arbury Banks Hill Fort, constructed most likely during the late Bronze Age, and might see some aircraft using nearby Newnham Airstrip. We’ll head back to our start point via Ivel Springs Local Nature Reserve, where the River Ivel has its source.

After the walk, there’s the option of a drink and (if desired) food at The Old White Horse close to the station, a Brewpoint pub serving freshly made artisan pizzas.

Dogs are welcome on a lead, but are not allowed in the dining area at the Ashwell pub stop.
