Someries Castle & Lea Valley Stroll (7 mi / 11 km, Leisurely, Booking Required)
This walk is for up to 20 people, including the leader.
A crisp winter walk passing through villages, meadows and woodland, with views of the River Lea and some 15th century ruins.
Starting at the cosy Bright Star Pub, we’ll head through fields into the hamlet of East Hyde before joining the Upper Lea Valley Way. Our walk will follow the River Lea before heading under the railway arches and passing the boundary of Luton Airport. After a brief pit-stop at the ruins of Someries Castle, we’ll head towards the village of Chiltern Green and arrive back at Peter’s Green for the option of a well-deserved pub beverage.
The circular walk takes in a segment of the vast Luton Hoo Estate which is still used for farming, events and activities. Plenty of wildlife and animals will likely be spotted including red kites, pheasants, black grouse, cows and horses. You may also see the odd convoy of white 4x4s due to the Estate’s popular ‘Landrover experiences’ – and don’t be alarmed if you hear any gunshots too, as game season is well underway!
This is a joint walk with our friends from the Social in St Albans Millennials group (https://www.meetup.com/social-in-st-albans). Dogs are very welcome on both the walk and at the pub but leads will be required due to possible grazing livestock in some of the fields we will be passing.
Dogs are welcome on a lead.
