Royston & Therfield Heath Circular (9 miles/15km - Moderate, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

Join us for a lovely countryside walk with a mixture of woodland, open farmland, historic tracks, and hilltops with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape before an optional visit to Royston Cave. This circular route is fairly steep in places and suitable footwear will be required.

We’ll start by heading out of Royston via the Priory Memorial Gardens enriched with mature trees and hedging. We will then follow a small section of the Hertfordshire Way, a 194 mile long circular trail, along some woodlands and past a few stud farms before stopping for a short break. Afterwards, we will continue down the trail through a fairly steep ascent and head to the village of Reed past arable fields before reaching our lunch stop at the village green. 

We will continue the rest of our walk through small sections of country roads past a pond where you might spot some birds, then cross some more farmland before reaching the village of Therfield. Here we will reach our pub stop at The Fox and Duck where you are welcome to join us for a drink or just simply relax on the village green.

Our final section of the walk will continue along a small part of the Icknield Way, a 110-mile long ancient trackway, across more rural landscape. Along the way, we may get a glimpse of the city of Cambridge in the distance if the weather is clear enough. We will finally get to Therfield Heath where you will be treated to some spectacular scenery overlooking Royston and the surrounding landscape.

We will finish our walk at Roisia's Cross, a medieval monument close to our start point. The entrance to Royston Cave is just across the road from here and those who wish to visit can book advance tickets for a tour at 3:20pm - please see our separate Meetup event page for details. Alternatively there is the option for an after-walk drink at The King James pub just opposite.

Dogs are welcome on a lead, but please do not bring them if attending the cave tour.
