The Ridgeway 50th Anniversary Circular (9 miles / 14.5 km, Moderate, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

The Ridgeway National Trail, which runs from Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire to Avebury in Wiltshire, is marking its 50th Anniversary this year. It provides some of the best walking in the Chiltern Hills, before continuing on over the North Wessex Downs and out across the Oxfordshire Plains.

To celebrate 50 years of The Ridgeway, we’ve devised a 9 mile circular walk. The route follows the Ridgeway southwest from Tring Station to Northill Wood, near the vast Wendover woods. After crossing the A41 in style on an iconic high cutting pedestrian bridge, we follow the trail across Wigginton Hill, then through ancient beech woods atop a ridge overlooking Tring Park. Continuing through Hastoe, we then walk through more ridge-top beech woods before turning southeast to meet up with the Chiltern Way trail for the return leg.

Much of the return follows Grim’s Ditch, the ancient tribal boundary marker, crossing Wigginton Bottom and Cow Roast before returning to the start point with a leisurely walk up the Grand Union Canal towpath.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.
