Nickey Line Rail Trail: Hemel to Redbourn (10 miles / 16km - Moderate, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader. 

Join us as we walk from Gadebridge Park in Hemel Hempstead through to the picturesque village of Redbourn. Along the way will be a lunch stop, so please bring a packed lunch with you. 

The route follows a mixture of surfaced and unsurfaced paths which will be muddy in times of wet weather, so walking boots are recommended. There are some gentle slopes, but most of the walk will be flat, taking in residential areas, woods, and fields. 

Our starting point will be the car park at Gadebridge Park, where we’ll head through the park and St Mary’s churchyard to the Old Town; a filming location for Ricky Gervais’ Afterlife series. Passing Hemel’s Fire Station, we’ll head out of town to join the Nickey Line, a 7-mile former railway line converted to a public footpath in 1985 from Hemel to Harpenden. Look out for hints along the way of its railway heritage. After almost four miles, we’ll turn off the Nickey Line into Redbourn, where we’ll have our lunch stop on Redbourn Common before our pub stop at The Cricketers. 

The second half of our walk takes us past a second St Mary’s Church and underneath the M1 motorway before entering the Aubrey Park Estate, now a hotel that was previously the site of an Iron Age hillfort and 17th Century farm. We’ll then head past the former Farr Brewery (sadly in liquidation) and farmland through to Grovehill Playing Fields, Piccotts End and back to our starting place. 

Dogs are welcome on a lead.
