Linton to Bartlow Hills Circular (8 miles/13km, Leisurely - Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.

A leisurely walk visiting one of Cambridgeshire’s hidden gems, the ancient Bartlow Hills.

We will start the walk from Linton, pass the zoo enclosure and head first to the old village of Hadstock right on the Cambs / Essex border. The village parish church of Saint Botolph has the oldest door still in use in Great Britain; the oldest parts of the church are thought to date from about AD 1020. From there we will head into Essex through farmland and will pass a pretty apple orchard, where we may come across some farm animals. Here we will take a lunch stop and make our way to the Bartlow Hills.

The Bartlow Hills are a collective group of Roman burial mounds known as tumuli dating back to 1st and 2nd century AD. Only a handful of these remain in the country and are supposedly the highest mounds in the old Roman empire north of the Alps (and they say Cambridgeshire is just flat!). We will make another stop there where you can walk up the hills to get a view of the local forested landscape.

Afterwards we will gradually make our way out of Bartlow and back to Linton, where we may stop off for refreshments at a local pub.
