Letchworth Greenway (14 miles/22.5km - Moderate, Booking Required)
This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.
Another chance to walk the Garden City Greenway, which consists of a mixture of country paths and pavement. This is primarily on farmland, but with some woodland and town walking, with some moderate slopes. This is a route that completely encircles Letchworth Garden City, allowing for views of the surrounding towns and villages.
Starting from Willian, we will pass the statue of Telford Morton, who was a resident of Letchworth until his death in 2001, before heading to the edge of Hitchin. We will join the Hitchin HOOP as we head back towards Letchworth, getting some good views of Hitchin as we pass Wilbury Barrow.
As we cross the railway line, we might be able to glimpse Letchworth's Spirella Building, formerly a corset factory. We will also pass prefab houses built between the two world wars to solve the housing shortages, Wilbury Way Cemetery, where Ebenezer Howard is buried, and the Wilbury pub, used as a filming location for "The World's End".
Just before we head into the countryside, we will stop for lunch at Standalone Farm; we will then skirt around the Northern edge of Letchworth before we deviate from the Greenway to visit the Orange Tree in Baldock. We will then rejoin the Greenway and pass under the motorway, as we head back towards Letchworth, passing the former creamery site (now a housing estate) before returning to Willian. There will be an optional drink afterwards at the Fox.
Dogs are welcome on a lead.
