Letchworth Greenway (13.5 miles / 22 km - Moderate, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.

For this walk we will follow the Garden City Greenway, a 13.6 mile trail around the edge of Letchworth Garden City taking in countryside, nature reserves and green spaces. We will walk anti-clockwise around the Greenway from the Manor Wood Car Park.

We start on the outskirts of Willian village through the fields before passing through Letchworth Gate and past various houses around the Jackman's estate. We head out on the fields close to the A1(M) and head towards Baldock before crossing the train line. We then follow Blackhorse Road before getting back onto the fields around Norton and coming to Radwell Meadows for our lunch stop.

After lunch we'll leave Radwell Meadows and make our way towards the Grange Playing Fields where we will have good views over towards Fairfield and if we're lucky across to Pegsdon and Barton Hills. We walk through fields to Standalone Farm, at which point there is a bit of road walking along the western side of Letchworth. As we approach the cemetery which contains the grave of Ebenezer Howard (famous as the father of the Garden City movement) we will take a small detour into the Wilbury Pub for a well earned break and refreshment stop.

After leaving the pub we will pass by the pre-fabricated houses before crossing back over the railway line. We pass the Hillbrow Recreation Ground, enjoying good views across to Hitchin whilst following more fields and coming out on the road near Hitchin Garden Centre.

Whilst skirting around the outskirts of Hitchin we head towards Wymondley Wood for the last part of our walk, passing the Willian Arboretum and the sculpture of Telford Morton (a local remembered as a keen gardener and allotment holder) on the way back to the Manor Wood Car Park. There is the option of popping along to The Fox pub for a drink after completing the 13.6 mile Letchworth Greenway.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.
