Letchworth Festival: Norton, Baldock & Willian (8.5 miles/13.5km - Leisurely, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

Hosted by Stag Walkers as part of Letchworth Festival. A circular walk from Letchworth town centre to Norton, Baldock and Willian, following parts of the Garden City Greenway and visiting Willian Village Fair. This will include a mix of urban and farmland terrain, with some gentle slopes. Please note that we may pass through fields containing livestock.

We will start by passing through Norton Common Local Nature Reserve, then Norton village, where we will cut through St. Nicholas Churchyard before joining the Garden City Greenway at Nortonbury. We will follow the Greenway until we cross a footbridge over the A1(M) and enter Baldock, where we will stop for an early lunch in Avenue Park.

We then rejoin the Greenway as we pass through the outskirts of Baldock, before heading back into open countryside until we reach Letchworth's Jackmans Estate. Here we pass the site of the old Co-operative Creamery, which has now been redeveloped as a housing estate. We will then pass open fields, and as we arrive at Willian, the steeple of All Saints' Church will come into view.

Willian Village Fair takes place on the green outside The Fox pub, so we have the option of either visiting the fair, or buying a drink at the pub. We will stay here for around half an hour, before heading into Letchworth following the route of the Stevenage to Letchworth Slow Way. This will take us past the grounds of St. Christopher Boarding School, The Old Corner Post Office (now vacant) and the UK's first roundabout, as featured in the film The World's End. We will have a great view towards Broadway Gardens (formerly Kennedy Gardens) along an avenue of trees, before we follow the streets of town back to the starting point.

After the walk, those who wish to do so can join us for an optional drink at the Garden City Brewery.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.
