Icknield Way #11: Kennett to Lackford (12 miles / 19km - Moderate, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 20 people, including the leader.

Part 11 of our plan to complete the Icknield Way Path - 114 miles following “the oldest road in Britain”. Join us for any of these walks!

Please note this is a linear walk from Kennett to Lackford. At the end of the walk we can use public transport to get back to the start (see details below).

This is a fairly flat route which takes us into the Breckland landscape, an area on the Norfolk/Suffolk border characterised by sandy soil, open heath and Scots Pine trees.

We begin by walking the first 1.5 miles through Kentford village to rejoin the Icknield Way Path. Leaving the road behind us we head along a sandy track bordered by Scots Pines and come to the quiet village of Herringswell.

We then head across the fields to get to Tuddenham. Here we find a beautiful village green where you have the option of either having your own lunch on the benches or walking just up the road to the Purple Pantry farm shop and cafe.

After lunch we head down a quiet country lane which opens up into Cavenham Heath, a National Nature Reserve with heather heathland where we may spot some bird life. After crossing the River Lark we then pass Icklingham and our route coincides with the Lark Valley Path.

Leaving the Icknield Way we head south towards Lackford down a mix of woodland trails and through Lackford Lakes Nature Reserve to get to the cafe and visitor centre. We shall have a stop here for a drink and possibly an ice cream before the last half-mile to get to the bus stop in Lackford.

At the end of our walk we shall catch the bus to Bury St Edmunds (services 355 or 16) where we can get the train back to Kennett or onto Cambridge and stations further south.

Dogs are welcome, on a lead.

Booking your place: If you would like to join, you must book in advance using the Stag Walkers Meetup group - see Notes for how to book & what to bring. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your booking so that someone else can take your place.

Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.

Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.

Please car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
