Icknield Way #10: Dullingham to Kennett (15 miles / 24km - Moderate, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

Part 10 of our plan to complete the Icknield Way Path - 114 miles following “the oldest road in Britain”. Join us for any of these walks!

Please note this is a linear walk from Dullingham to Kennett, which are both on the Cambridge to Ipswich railway line - we recommend getting there and back by train.

At just under 15 miles this is a long but rewarding route taking us from Cambridgeshire into Suffolk, via horse country just south of Newmarket, past historic sites and through a series of small villages with unusual names.

Departing from Dullingham station we hurry through that notoriously uninteresting village and out into contrastingly fascinating fields. A brief stretch through Stetchworth brings us to the Devil's Dyke, a massive Anglo-Saxon earthwork reaching almost 7 miles in length from its most westerly point at Reach to its eastern tip nearby. After crossing this ancient boundary marker, we enter Iceni territory.

Once we've passed a number of paddocks and the charming village of Cheveley, we come to the settlement of Ashley, namesake of today’s walk leader. We’ll no doubt stop for a photo by the village sign, and shall also picnic here on a little green by a duck pond.

Refuelled we march onward till we reach the River Kennett, then follow it east before crossing to head up round the wooded eastern flank of the Dalham Hall Estate, erstwhile gaff of cancelled imperialist Cecil Rhodes. Continuing north we cast our eyes over Gazeley before passing through the hamlet of Needham Street then forward through Kentford, to arrive at Kennett Station where we’ll aim to catch the train back home just after 5pm.

Also on this walk we’ll likely stop at a pub for a drink along the way (it is quite a long walk after all).

Please note that this walk is not suitable for dogs.
