Hitchin & Charlton Introductory Walk (5 miles / 8km - Leisurely, Booking Required)
This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.
Join us for a short morning walk through Hitchin and into the countryside around Charlton, organised as part of Hitchin Festival.
If you’re new to countryside walking, or haven’t been to many group walks, this is one for you!
Regular walkers are also invited to attend who'd like to welcome others to enjoy the outdoors with us.
We’ll begin by walking through the historic centre of Hitchin, then go around the edge of the Priory and over to Priory Fields, where we’ll have a great view of the countryside to the northwest. We’ll head downhill towards the hamlet of Charlton, then through fields and up a pleasant hedge-lined bridleway before turning back towards town.
On our return leg we’ll see the source of the River Hiz and join the Hicca Way, the waymarked trail alongside the river. After passing Charlton Piggery we’ll head uphill again and across Priory Fields, before returning to our start point.
Near the end of the walk there’ll be a chance to detour back into town for a drink or ice cream in the market square.
Please bring water and an optional snack for during the walk.
Dogs are welcome on a lead.
Booking your place: If you would like to join, you must book in advance using the Stag Walkers Meetup group - see Notes for how to book & what to bring. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your booking so that someone else can take your place.
Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.
Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
Please car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
