Hertfordshire Way #17: Much Hadham to Bishop's Stortford (8 mi / 13km, Leisurely, Booking Required)

Part 17 of an epic long-distance trail around Hertfordshire!

The Hertfordshire Way is a 200-mile route around the county, which we're walking in sections each month. Don’t worry if you’ve missed previous parts of the series - everyone is welcome to join any of these walks.

Please note that this is a linear walk. There is a bus service which links the start and end points. Walkers can choose to park at the start or end, and take the bus either before or after the walk as needed. You may also arrange to car share between the start and end if you prefer.

This section of the trail starts in Much Hadham, a large and rather well to do village with a long high street featuring many beautiful houses of varying ages and styles. The village itself has been around for at least 1,100 years.

After walking part of the High Street, we turn southeast, crossing the River Ash and following a path through woodland and across farmland to Perry Green, a hamlet that was the home of famous sculptor Henry Moore and now hosts a permanent exhibit of his sculptures in the gardens of his former home. We will be able to see some of these sculptures as we enter the hamlet.

Another path across farmland brings us to Green Tye, a rural hamlet with a large green where we will pause for our packed lunch break. Those who wish to use toilet facilities during lunch (or grab a swift half pint) can visit the Prince of Wales Pub. Please do buy something if you wish to use their facilities.

After lunch, we travel north across rolling farmland, joining a valley and following a stream through pastures and then along the edge of a golf course. More paths through farmland south of Bury Green lead us to the western edge of Bishop’s Stortford.

We follow a path east through Bishop’s Park then through the grounds of Bishop’s Stortford College, before joining roads to walk the rest of the way to our end point near the town centre.

Dogs are welcome on a lead. Some pastures may contain livestock; dogs must be kept under control.
