Hertfordshire Way #13: Ware to Bayford (11.5 miles / 18.5km - Moderate, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

Part 13 of an epic long-distance trail around Hertfordshire!

The Hertfordshire Way is a 200-mile route around the county, which we're walking in sections each month. Don’t worry if you’ve missed previous parts of the series - everyone is welcome to join any of these walks.

This leg of the trail takes us through the county town of Hertford on a linear route from Ware, including a loop through Bayford.

To begin, we leave Ware, then follow the winding riverside path alongside the River Lee Navigation to Hertford. The route takes us through the pretty town with an opportunity to look at what pubs or coffee shops await us on our return.

The trail then takes us uphill and through the residential streets, leaving the town behind for now. From here, we follow the railway line along a grassy path to the village of Bayford. This is where we leave the Hertfordshire Way for today, and where we stop for our packed lunch.

We walk along a quiet road, then head off to start our return route to Hertford. This takes us through a small patch of woodland and then picks back up with the River Lea.

When we get to the edge of Hertingfordbury, we pick up the Cole Green Way (a former railway line), which leads us back into Hertford. At the end we can have a drink before catching a train or bus back to Ware. There is also the option of walking back after which is around 2.5 miles along the New River but this depends on daylight.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.
