Hertfordshire Way #12: Broxbourne to Ware (9.5 miles/15km, Leisurely - Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.

Part 12 of an epic long-distance trail around Hertfordshire - join us for any of these!

This section takes us into East Hertfordshire and is mostly a waterside walk including parts of the New River, the River Lee Navigation and the River Ash.

Please note this is a linear walk from Broxbourne station to Ware station, on the Hertford East branch line of the West Anglia Main Line.

Starting from Broxbourne station, we will follow the New River Path out of Broxbourne before crossing to the River Lee Navigation to Stanstead Abbotts. We will then leave the river to walk through the village before climbing the hill above the picturesque Ash valley, where we will stop for our packed lunch.

We will then descend through the valley, returning to the River Lee Navigation. We will take a short detour through Amwell nature reserve, stopping to view the grave of Harold Abrahams, who won the 100 metres sprint 100 years ago at the 1924 Olympics, as depicted in the film Chariots of Fire.

We will then return to the River Lee Navigation, finishing at Ware, where we can take a train back to the start point.

Please note this walk is not suitable for dogs; some of the route will be on the River Lee Towpaths, where there are likely to be a lot of cyclists.
