Harpenden Green Loop (9 miles / 14.5km, Leisurely, Booking Required)
This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.
The Harpenden Green Loop is a new trail linking green spaces around Harpenden. The 9-mile circular route offers a varied mix of suburban, town and countryside landscapes. The majority of the terrain is relatively flat, with a couple of gentle inclines and one larger set of steps along the way.
The route begins at Rothamsted Park, by The Eric Morecambe Centre, which hosts a variety of performing arts events and exhibitions and is also home to Harpenden Museum. From here, we follow the pathway known as Lime Tree Avenue, named after the rows of common lime trees that run alongside the trail, before continuing towards the Rothamstead Estate.
We then join the Nickey Line, a historic disused railway line that was reopened as a public woodland path in the 1980s. The route continues onto the Lea Valley Line, passing Westfield Recreation Ground, which is home to protected slow worms that we may be lucky enough to spot along the way.
Our lunch stop is at Batford Springs, a picturesque nature reserve comprising a rare chalk-lined stream, meadows, reed fen and the River Lea. Due to the limited options for shops nearby, it is recommended to bring a packed lunch.
The remainder of the route takes us through a mixture of industrial, residential and woodland scenery. We pass through areas including Crabtree Fields, Harpenden Golf Club and Harpenden Common before making our way back into town.
The walk finishes at Rothamstead Park, with the option of enjoying a post-walk drink at one of the many local pubs in the area.
Dogs are welcome on a lead.
