Greensand Ridge Walk #5: Bletchley to Leighton Buzzard (12.5 mi/20 km - Moderate, Booking Required)

This is our fifth and final section of the Greensand Ridge Walk long-distance trail across Bedfordshire. Missed some of the other walks? Don’t worry - everyone is welcome to join us for this grand finale.

Please note this is a 12.5-mile linear walk from Bletchley railway station to Leighton Buzzard railway station. The route is graded moderate due to the distance, featuring a few steady climbs on rolling terrain. Walking boots are recommended as the tracks can become muddy or uneven depending on recent weather. For those who are driving, we recommend meeting at Leighton Buzzard station first. From there, we can take a direct train over to the start at Bletchley so your cars are waiting at the end.

Setting off from Bletchley station, we’ll head through the Blue Lagoon Local Nature Reserve, a quiet wildlife haven surrounding a deep, water-filled former brickworks pit. From the nature reserve, we will take a scenic detour through Newton Leys, following the pathways past the lakes before looping eastward to cross over the West Coast Main Line. From there, we join the Grand Union Canal towpath. This flat waterside stretch serves as a straightforward warm-up before we head into the countryside. We will then make a steady climb up sandy paths toward Great Brickhill, continuing along the ridge and looking out over the valley. We rejoin the official Greensand Ridge Walk trail just to the south of Rammamere Farm.

As we continue along the ridge, we will explore the wide-open terrain of Rammamere Heath, catching lovely views before transitioning into the woodlands of Rushmere Country Park. We will stop here for our packed lunch near the visitor centre café, where toilet facilities are available. After lunch, we’ll follow the sandy tracks through the trees.

For the final stretch, we’ll head down from the ridges toward the valley floor and rejoin the Grand Union Canal for a final waterside walk into Leighton Buzzard town centre. The trail concludes at the Greensand Ridge Gateway Feature - a prominent public art piece and water bottle filling station designed by artist Steve Pardue to celebrate local wildlife and heritage.

For those interested, we will have an optional pub stop at the end of the walk at The Black Lion, which sits roughly opposite the finishing monument. Anyone looking to head straight home from the trail end can make the short walk directly back to the train station from here.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.
