Foxton to Thriplow Daffodil Weekend (8 miles / 13km - Leisurely, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.

A leisurely walk through the South Cambs countryside, including a visit to Thriplow Daffodil Weekend & Country Fair. Please note that tickets are required to visit the Fair and these sell out every year so please book early to avoid disappointment. Adult tickets are £12 each, available from www.thriplowdaffodils.org.uk (be sure to purchase Sunday tickets).

The Daffodil Weekend has been taking place in Thriplow since 1969. It’s a fun event which includes live music, street food, a beer tent, tea rooms, Morris dancing, classic cars, a dog show and half a million daffodils in bloom throughout the village. Over 150 types of daffodil will be on display, including the unique Thriplow gold.

We will start our walk in Foxton, accessible by rail on the Hitchin - Cambridge line, and will pass through the villages of Newton and Fowlmere on our way to and from Thriplow. The route is mainly flat with a few gentle slopes, on footpaths through farmland and along minor roads.

We first head alongside fields and by the Hoffer Brook to reach Newton. Here we’ll pause for a tea break on the village green. We then continue along the road to Thriplow, where traffic restrictions are in place during Daffodil Weekend.

At Thriplow we can spend 2-3 hours enjoying the various attractions, either together, in small groups or individually. There are plenty of refreshments on offer but you can bring your own packed lunch if you prefer. After we’ve had a good look around we’ll meet by The Green Man pub at 3pm to resume our walk. 

Our return leg takes us along the road to Fowlmere, then through farmland and gently uphill to Foxton Wood, a mixed woodland planted in 1995. There are good views from here over the countryside to the south. Back in Foxton we’ll pass through the Dovecot Meadow, where we’ll see a thatched dovecot built in 1706 to keep doves or pigeons as a source of eggs and meat.

At the end of the walk there’s the option of a drink at The White Horse in Foxton before heading home.

Some paths may be muddy, so boots or walking shoes are recommended.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.
