Exploring the Chiltern Way! (14 miles / 22.5km - Moderate, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.

This lengthy and rewarding walk explores the north-east corner of the Chiltern Way long-distance trail. Starting near Hitchin in the pretty village of Pirton, we’ll ascend a few Chiltern Peaks and visit the local nature reserves of Galley & Warden Hills and Pegsdon Hills.

We start by heading south from Pirton and picking up the Chiltern Way. We make our way past Tingley Wood and the hamlet of Little Offley. We then go through rolling countryside past Lilley Hoo Farm, descending to the village of Lilley and out of the valley again past Lilleypark Wood.

Next we reach Warden Hill where there are wide-ranging views over Luton and the surrounding countryside. Here we shall stop for our packed lunches.

After lunch we shall leave the main Chiltern Way to pick up the Chiltern Way Northern Extension. Some of this route might be familiar to those who walked the Icknield Way last year as it shares some of the same paths.

We cross Galley Hill and head northeast along a wide track towards Telegraph Hill. We then turn north to go through Pegsdon Hills nature reserve where we may see grazing sheep and perhaps some highland cows!

At Pegsdon village we shall stop at the pub for a liquid refreshment.

From here it's a short walk back past Knocking Hoe national nature reserve and along Wood Lane, picking up the path we left on to take us back to Pirton and the end of the walk.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.
