Bishop's Stortford Morning Introductory Walk (6miles/10km - Leisurely, Booking Required)
This walk is for up to 25 people, including the walk leader.
The first of two walks today on the Hertfordshire-Essex borders! Why not join us for one of these short walks or come to both if you fancy a full day out. This morning walk from Bishop's Stortford station will take in parks, woodland and open countryside to the northwest before heading through the most historic part of the market town.
We'll stroll through Castle Gardens Park, passing the ruins of 12th century Waytemore Castle while following the River Stort, before heading uphill on a residential street towards meadows and woodland. Before long we'll pass under the A120 into farmland, eventually becoming very flat and open as if to announce 'welcome to Essex!' We'll skirt around the intriguingly named Bloodhounds' Wood, through horse fields and across the lawn and sweeping drive of Hadham Lodge.
Rolling fields will take us back towards town via pleasant mown paths, parks and alleyways, with a descent down the wide, tree-lined Windhill, the oldest part of Bishop's Stortford. Black-and-white half-timbered dwellings and historic churches are found here, before we emerge onto the High Street (including public toilets) and head back towards the railway station. Those staying for the afternoon's walk may wish to join us on an open space next to the river for a packed lunch break.
Dogs are welcome, on a lead - be aware we will be crossing roads, passing through cattle and horse fields and using some stiles.
Booking your place: If you would like to join, you must book in advance using the Stag Walkers Meetup group - see Notes for how to book & what to bring. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your booking so that someone else can take your place.
Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited. Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
Please car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
